Here is a list of the abilities we allow, and a basic summary of how they work. For several of them, we allow provide a link to the ability's description at the Harry Potter Lexicon. If you're truly interested in your character having an ability, it's recommended that you read all available information.
There are limits on how many characters can have each ability. Please check the student abilities claim or the adult abilities claim to make sure your desired ability is still available.
The books haven't provided a ton of information for some of these abilities, and for a few we have added more information that we ourselves came up with. So please note that not all of this is strictly by the book.
VAMPIRE ,
››› Due to lack of information provided in the books, our vampires will not be based on the type in the books. Please note that they will also not be based on the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.
››› Pure vampires cannot go into the sunlight. If they do, they will become very crispy very fast. A pile of ashes, actually.
››› Partial/non-pure vampires can enter the sunlight, though only for limited amounts of time. If they are exposed to too much sun, they experience weakness, fatigue, and if not treated they will die. They can spend about 4-6 hours in sunlight before they start feeling the effects.
››› All vampires, pure or not, require blood to survive. The blood must be fresh, and must be from a human or another vampire in order to provide the necessary nutrition. To accommodate the needs of vampires, hospitals such as St. Mungo's and the hospital wing at Hogwarts carry supplies of blood to be fed to vampires that need it. Vampires must feed about once every two weeks; the longer they go without feeding, the weaker they feel. If a vampire goes too long without proper nourishment, they will die.
››› Vampires experienced enhanced senses: all five of their senses are stronger than a normal witch/wizard (though a non-pure vampire's senses are not as strong as those of a pure vampire), plus they can see perfectly well in complete darkness.
››› When vampires are angry or stressed or extremely hungry, their eyes might turn black or red. (It's either/or; one color per vampire.)
››› They also have enhanced strength and agility (again, it's more pronounced in pure vampires than in non-pure ones).
››› Vampires can procreate with each other or with humans (which includes Muggles and witches/wizards) hence why some can be non-pure. Males are constantly fertile, but females are only fertile about once every ten years.
››› Vampires are not immortal; their aging is just drastically slowed. They can be killed by bullets and knives just like anyone else, though to help out, they heal very quickly so long as they're up to date on feeding (a starving vampire will not heal quickly). Garlic does not affect them, and a steak to the heart would kill anyone, so it's hardly just a vampire thing.
››› Just because a non-vampire gets bit by a vampire doesn't mean they'll turn into a vampire. If it was that simple, everyone in the world would be a vampire, since vampires often feed from humans instead of accepting blood from a hospital.
››› In order to be turned, a vampire needs to drain the human's blood until they are near death, then the human must drink the blood of the vampire. What follows is a painful transformation in which the human becomes a vampire. Within the first few months of being turned, a vampire will need to feed extremely often.
››› To make it so vampire students could still attend classes, the school staff and ministry bewitched all the windows so that UV light could not filter through. It's a relatively new spell, and has proved to be very useful. Outdoor classes such as Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures are not available to vampire students unless the professors are willing to teach extra classes at night.
WEREWOLF ,
››› Werewolves only transform once a month, at the full moon. Naturally they turn into a very beastly wolf with little self-control and the need to bite humans, but there are potions that law requires werewolves to take, that makes it so the werewolf transforms into a normal wolf.
››› The Wolfsbane Potion is the required potion to be drunk; it dulls the effects of the transformation. Those who take Wolfsbane regularly will still experience a benefit should they forget to take it: they will not transform until they are hit by direct moonlight.
››› A werewolf can be distinguished from a normal wolf physically by several small distinguishing characteristics: this includes the pupils of the eyes, the shape of the snout, and tufted tail.
››› Werewolf traits can be inherited, though only pure werewolves make the monthly transformation. Non-pure werewolves just have an extreme liking of raw meat, and tend to be more aggressive around the full moon.
››› A werewolf must be in it's transformed state in order to turn a human into a werewolf. If they bite when not in their transformed state and break the skin, the bitten may experience various traits of a non-pure werewolf (see above).
››› When in their human form, werewolves still have wolf-ish traits. They have a strong liking for meat, particularly rare or raw meat. Their eyes will change turn yellow when they are angry or extremely stressed. Also, they tend to be more aggressive, especially as the full moon grows near. There are some exceptions though; not all werewolves are extremely aggressive in their human form, but most are. Their sense of smell is also much better, and they're a bit stronger than they were before.
ANIMAGUS ,
››› Animagi are witches/wizards with the ability to transform into an animal of their choosing.
››› They can only turn into one animal. This ability takes many years to master, and is a very rare ability.
››› Find more information about this ability here.
METAMORPHMAGUS ,
››› This is the ability to change one's appearance at will.
››› It cannot be learned, only inherited; it's not always inherited, and sometimes the children of witches/wizards with this ability will not pass the trait onto their children (in fact, this is more often the case than not).
››› It is extremely rare.
VEELA ,
››› In it's pure form, a Veela is not considered a human.. It is considered a creature.
››› Their hairs are often used in wand cores.
››› When complacent, Veela are outstandingly beautiful creatures who are capable of putting people under a trance or daze in which the affected person will feel the strong need to impress the Veela. But when angered, the Veela changes form into a frightening bird-like creature with scaly wings.
››› Male Veela are extremely rare, though females are more common.
››› Veela can procreate with witches and wizards. A non-pure Veela does not have the same abilities; the less amount of Veela blood, the more muted the abilities are. Partial Veela can still put surrounding people into a form of a daze, though it's not nearly as strong as a pure Veela. Also, partial Veela do not change form or have any special abilities when they become angered. Partial Veela are also very attractive.
OCCLUMENS ,
››› Occlumens is the defense against Legilimens. It's the ability to block your mind, keeping intruders out.
››› This talent requires a lot of practice, and just because someone attempts to learn this ability does not mean they will succeed. It takes years of practice to master, and typically requires the tutoring of a successful Occlumens.
››› Being an Occlumens does not automatically make you a Legilimens.
››› Find more information about this ability here.
LEGILIMENS ,
››› Basically, Legilimens are mind-readers (though those that practice this branch of magic consider this a naive interpretation).
››› This talent requires a lot of practice, and just because someone attempts to learn this ability does not mean they will succeed. It takes years of practice to master, and typically requires the tutoring of a successful Legilimens.
››› Being a Legilimens does not automatically make you an Occlumens.

SEER ,
››› Seers range from being just extremely intuitive, to being able to have actual visions or make predictions of the future.
››› They use such methods as reading tea leaves and gazing into crystal balls to predict the future.
››› Often a Seer will go into a trance to make their prediction, and will not recall making it afterwords (think Trelawney).
››› Simpler visions can be had during meditation or in the form of dreams.
